This is a great project to keep in your back pocket for unexpected downtime, or a backup activity. The paper helicopter is simple to make and can keep kids entertained for a good period of time.
Supplies for Paper Helicopters
- Printable paper helicopter Template
- STEM Paper Helicopter Challenge Printable
- Scissors
- Paperclip
- Markers (optional)
How to Make a Paper Helicopter
To start print the printable template and cut the three helicopters apart. Have children cut along the solid line of the paper helicopter, then fold along the dotted lines. Place a paperclip on the folded end of the helicopter. On the other end of the copter fold the two piece in opposite directions.
If you wish have children decorate the helicopter with markers. Then toss it in the air and watch it twirl slowly to the ground.
Make it a STEM Activity
Challenge kids to see develop a helicopter that stays in the air the for 10 seconds. Have kids think about how they could improve their helicopter to and make it fall more slowly. Use our STEM Paper Helicopter Challenge printable to have kids make changes to the helicopter and record the results.
You can use one stopwatch to time each helicopter for the kids, but it is easier to have one for each kid. I found a classroom set of stopwatches on amazon that worked great for this activity, and I was able to use them for other activities like The Helium Balloon Hover Challenge.
Some things to try; make smaller or larger propellers, fold paper differently, add more weight with paperclips.
When children have created the best helicopter they can, hold an official testing. Have them drop the helicopter from at least 6 feet off the ground (a ladder or balcony) and time how long it takes for the helicopter to hit the ground.
