Ice cream in a bag has been a classic summer activity for decades. This simple activity encompasses physics, measuring, fine motor skills and of course a delicious treat.
Supplies
- Quart size zip top bags
- Gallon size zip top bags
- Ice cream salt or Kosher salt
- Ice
- Ingredients (see recipes below)
No matter what recipe you choose to create in your ice cream bag (see the 5 recipes below), the steps are the same. First you need to measure out the ice cream ingredients and put the into the quart size bag, squeeze out as much air as you can then make sure the top is zip very tightly.
If you would like you can put that bag into another quart size bag to make sure the ingredients do not spill out, again remove the air and seal tightly. Using a second bag will prevent any waste if the bag breaks open during the creation process.
Next add 5 cups of ice and 3 tbsp salt to a gallon size bag. Then, put the quart size bag into the gallon bag with the ice and salt, remove excess air and seal the top.
Shake the gallon bag vigorously for 10-20 minutes or until ice cream has formed. As you shake the bag will become very cold, reaching a low temperature of about 15 degrees. The reason the temperature is so low is because when salt and water mix it lowers the freezing temperature, making your ice cream freeze quickly!
Have you tried an ice cream making ball? This ball can be found on Amazon and takes ice cream making to the next level. Pour in your ingredients and roll the ball back and forth. After 10 minutes you have a delicious treat without the frozen hands!
