How To Do a Letters in Nature Scavenger Hunt

To find letters in the outdoors you need to have at least one camera or phone to take photos. Ask kids to decide on a word they want to spell using letters they find in nature.  This word could be their name, a friends name, a sport, “grandma”, etc.

Once everyone knows the letters they are looking for, head out into the wilderness.  If you have woods or a path near you this is an ideal place to find letters, however a simple playground area will work if you are limited to nature space.

Once outdoors ask kid look for letters in nature. Letters in nature are natural items that when looked at in a different way may look like a letter, lower-case or capital. If the kids find one take a photo of the letter, or allow the kids to use the camera to take a photo.

Remember that you are looking for “Natural” letters. Yes, you could create the letters using natural items but it is more rewarding to find the letters naturally.

After you have found a letter for every child’s word, get the photos developed or print them from a computer. Cut construction paper into 1” stripes. Lay the photos on the table. And use the stripes to create a frame for the word. Glue together the stripes and then glue or tape the photos into the frame.
