Add to this activity with color mixing water play activity. Before you stab the bag of water have kids try their hand at color mixing with this fun water activity.

Supplies

  • Zip Top Bag
  • Water
  • 5-10 Sharpened Pencils

How to Setup Stab a Bag of Water

Gather some pencils, sharpen them.  The sharper the pencil the easier it is to get it through the bag.  Next, fill the bag most of the way full with water.

Get kids Talking

Before you start the activity get the kids thinking with a few discussion questions.

  • What will happen when you poke the pencil through the bag?
  • What will happen to the water in the bag?
  • Does it matter if you stab the pencil all the way through the bag or just through one side?

Stab the Bag of Water

Take a pencil and stab the bag. Push the pencil through one side and then quickly through the other. Continue to add pencils. As you add pencils ask kids what they observe.

If you are doing this activity outdoors or you have a bucket on hand try and stab the bag through one side of the bag to see what happens.

Discussion Questions

After you have stabbed the bag a few times spark some critical thinking with some more questions.

  • What’s happening?
  • Why didn’t the water come out the holes?
  • What will happen when you remove a pencil?

Again, if you are outside or using a bucket pull a pencil out of the bag to show the kids what will happen. Make note of how far the water stream squirts from the holes, when you remove another pencil the distance the water squirts will lessen.
