How to Prepare the Bread

  • Hand washing, have everyone wash their hands.  This should go without saying, but sometimes kids need to be reminded of general health and safety procedures.
  • After hand washing, the first thing you need to do when we make bread is activate the yeast. The scientific name for the active dry yeast is also known as “sugar-eating fungus.” When the yeast is dry it is dormant like it is sleeping, but when you add water and sugar it wakes up, or becomes active.
  • Add 1 ½ Tbsp of yeast to a mixing bowl, add 1 1/4 Cup warm water, then  3 tbsp sugar, let it sit for 5 minutes.
Let yeast activate. Make bread with kids

While you wait..Make butter

Fill the mason jar about 1/2 full with heavy cream, add a pinch of salt and a marble. Secure the lid tightly.  Have kids take turns shaking the jar vigorously. When the butter is done it will form a solid mass in the center of the jar. That simple!

Back to the Bread..

Demonstrate the correct way to measure flour.  Then have the children measure out 3 cups of flour. Add 1 tsp of salt ½ tsp of baking powder. Mix together the dry ingredients.
Add the dry ingredients to the active yeast. Mix well for two minutes, make sure to scrape the bottom of the bowl so everything is mixed well.
Put down some parchment paper and sprinkle the paper with flour. Have kids take the dough out of the bowl and take turns kneading the bread. (add flour as needed)  Knead the dough until it is springy and does not tear when you pull it.

Knead the bread.

Separate the dough into 8 chunks, have the kids roll the dough into balls.
Rub just a little oil on the outside of each dough ball.
Bake at 400 for 10-12 minutes.  The rolls are done when they start to brown on top.
Remove the bread from the oven, allow to cool slightly then serve with your homemade butter!
