How to make a recycled crayon Candle
Gather children and have them begin peel the wrapper off of the old crayons. Just a heads up… this is very tedious and the younger kiddos needed a lot of help. Depending on the age of kids you are working with you may want to do this step yourself before starting the activity.
After the wrappers have been peeled from the crayons preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Then, have the kids select which crayon colors they want to put into their candle. They crayons will melt together so to many colors will end up brownish. Encourage them to pick one to three colors. The example here used purple and pink and red.
Next, cut the wick so that it is long enough to touch the bottom of the mason jar and hangs out the top. Place one end of the wick in the clothes pin and dangle the other end into a jar. The wick should touch the bottom of the jar. Then, break the crayons into small pieces and add them to the mason jar trying to keep the wick as centered as possible.
Next, add the fragrance. If you are looking for a good fragrance oil, I found a set on Amazon at a reasonable price. Click here to see the current price. It is not necessary to add fragrance but it covers up the waxy crayon smell that can be unpleasant.
Place the candles on a cookie sheet and bake for 20-30 minutes until the crayons melt together. Remove from the oven and allow to cool. Now you have a one-of-a-kind crayon candle.
