Busy boxes for the children’s hospital is a great way for children to give to other children. This service learning project is easy for kids to do and promotes service learning.

What is a Busy Box?

A Busy box is a box for children and siblings of children that are at the children’s hospital. The box contains items to keep kids occupied and focused on play rather than illness.

Supplies for Busy Boxes

Gift Boxes 5x5x3.5 or 8x8x4 are perfect
Dollar store items
A few trinkets

How to Make Busy Boxes for the Children’s Hospital

Start this activity with discussions. Tell kids that you are going to be making “busy boxes” for kids at the Children’s Hospital. Then get them thinking about the activity using some of the following questions:

Why do you think kids at the Children’s Hospital would need a “busy box”
Do you think brothers and sisters at the Children’s Hospital could use “busy boxes”?

Give each child a box and have them decorate the box with bright colorful pictures and positive messages.

Have the kids fill the boxes with the supplies. Check the list of items below for busy box item ideas. When the boxes are done you can wrap them in a bow and take a photo of the kids with the busy boxes they created. Then bring the boxes to the children’s hospital.

Take it a Step Further

If its possible to take children to the store you can have them pick out the items they want to add to the busy boxes. By allowing kids to decide on the items it allows them to feel more invested in the project.
